An Ode to New York: I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face

The Earworm today is a song from “My Fair Lady.”

Henry Higgins reflects upon the fact that the one person who didn’t find him too insufferable to associate with…has left him forever. Not exactly admitting love, and avoiding the admission of sorrow, he spends about four minutes meandering across lyrics that allude to Eliza Doolittle being his every thought and desire.

I still only like New York as a Friend

Even though I’m still on the fence about my lasting feelings for New York, I know for sure I don’t want our relationship to end. I’m not going to spend 900 words stumbling through my thoughts on the state, but I can tell you this: New York can be really sweet when it wants to be. Sometimes, New York does such cool things, like bring #UsGuys together and bring me wonderful, beautiful, sweet friends. It’s courteous enough to be adjacent to Canada so I can go visiting. And then other times….New York can be pretty dickish. Like when it dips its temperatures down into the 30-degree range when it’s entirely unnecessary.

Of course I’m comparing New York to a Boyfriend

It’s only natural I compare New York to a boyfriend. First: I’m pretty thoroughly single. Second: boys are a complete mystery until it’s too late to not care about them – in the same way you can’t really understand a state until you throw yourself into loving it. And there is a whole relationship arc that both these situations follow.

I tend to find that a lot of things fall into the boyfriend relationship arc. What’s the archetype you tend to measure against?
