Cee-Lo is anĀ innovator. This artist has always been ahead of the curve, but with his feet planted firmly in the musical roots of hip-hop/R&B: Motown, Rock, Funk, Blues, Soul, and all points in between. Did you know he is a producer whose hands (and distinctive voice) have been in some of the biggest hits of the last decade? His current single says everything you can’t say out loud in public….well….out loud and in public. But in a way that can be kept private (and must be kept off public broadcast due to censors). Such is the power of Social Media.
Remember OK GO! ? Remember that video “Here It Goes Again”? It marked the passing of Mtv as The Authority on what “the youth” preferred. OK GO! recorded the single, asked their record label to release the single, the label dragged its feet and committed small dollars, and OK GO! took things into their own hands: the band recorded its own low-budget video, posted that video on YouTube and a AVALANCHE of requests flooded in to Mtv’s “total request” countdown show. Through social media (in its infancy at the time) OK GO! innovated, created its OWN PR and record sales –>backwards<– and taught the industry that it’s called PURCHASE POWER for a reason.
